About FLUX.1

FLUX.1 comes from Black Forest Labs, a team founded by several of the original Stable Diffusion researchers. Its models are 12-billion-parameter rectified-flow transformers, and when FLUX.1 launched in 2024 it reset expectations for open image generation — sharper prompt adherence, coherent hands and anatomy, and readable in-image text that earlier open models struggled with. Unlike the SD and SDXL lineage, FLUX.1 pairs a large transformer with the T5 text encoder, so it reads long, natural-language descriptions instead of relying on comma-separated Danbooru tags.

The family is really a set of specialized tools rather than one model. FLUX.1 [dev] is the quality-first workhorse; FLUX.1 [schnell] is a few-step distillation for near-instant drafts; FLUX.1 Krea is tuned for photographic realism and believable skin; and FLUX.1 Kontext performs in-context editing, changing an existing image from a text instruction. Choose FLUX.1 when prompt fidelity, photorealism, typography, or complex multi-subject scenes matter — it is a top open choice for product shots, posters, and text-in-image work. For anime and character art, the SDXL-based Pony and Illustrious ecosystems still lead on style range and sheer LoRA depth. FLUX.1’s own LoRA library is smaller but growing quickly, and because each image runs a 12B model it costs more Buzz per generation than lighter checkpoints — a worthwhile trade when you need the prompt followed exactly.

How to prompt FLUX.1

  • Write in natural language — complete sentences, not comma-separated tags. FLUX.1’s T5-XXL text encoder actually parses grammar, so describe the scene as you would to a person. Aim for roughly 30–80 words ([dev] handles up to 512 tokens, [schnell] 256).
  • Put the most important element first — FLUX.1 weights earlier words more heavily.
  • Skip weight syntax and negative prompts: (word:1.5) and ((word)) are ignored, and there is no negative prompt. Describe what you want instead — "sharp, crisp focus" rather than "no blur."
  • Lighting drives quality more than anything else, so be specific — "warm golden light from a window on the left" beats "warm lighting." Camera and film references work too, e.g. "shot on Hasselblad, 80mm, f/2.8" or "Kodak Portra 400."
  • For text in the image, wrap the words in quotation marks. On Dev, avoid the phrase "white background" (it can blur) — say "clean bright backdrop" instead.
